Green-Flag Focus
Eco-Schools is an international award programme that guides schools on their sustainable journey, providing a simple framework to help make sustainability an integral part of school life. Eco-Schools can help enhance the curriculum and get the whole school united behind something important.
The Eco-School mission is to help make every school in the country sustainable and to bring about behaviour change in young people and those connected to them so that good habits learned in schools are followed through into homes and communities.
Kainon has achieved their International Green Flag! This rates Kainon as a leading Eco School after 5 years of integrated Eco – curricular lessons, activities and whole school Eco projects which relate to Kainon’s 6 focus themes:
Healthy Living
Biodiversity
Local and Global Issues
Resource Use
Community and Heritage
Pulses (Cultivation and use of Beans/Lentils etc.)
Some of Kainon’s whole school action projects have been a focus on growing vegetables in our veggie garden, visiting our wetlands close by and learning about the birds and indigenous plants and trees, making and placing owl boxes in trees to encourage owls back into the area, outreach and care for our community, learning and appreciating our heritage, focusing on local and global issues like saving the rhino and saving water and our most recent whole school project is saving grey water for our Grey Water Bank so that we can use it to water our indigenous gardens.
Kainon was also rated the best school in December on the Water Explorer Interschool Progamme and we are looking forward to our Water Festival with a special assembly and songs and presentation by some of the senior children. Kainon is now working towards their Platinum Flag!
